Coordinate Numbers and Geometries

Postby Cris_Flores_2F » Tue Nov 28, 2023 11:49 pm

What is the connection between geometries and coordinate numbers? Does the coordination number tell you what the geometry of the molecule is?

Coordination number is the number of ligands directly attached to the transition metal (central atom). I think it's similar to the areas of electron density when determining shape of the molecule but coordination number only count the bonds, not lone pairs. For example, octahedral shape has 6 areas of electron density (bonds and lone pairs) and the coordination number is 6, BUT coordination number doesn't involved lone pairs (6 bonds). Hope that helps!
