Naming

In the example done in class how do you know to put "dehydrate" at the end for Penta amino chloro (II) chloride dehydrate ([Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl.2H2O). Also do you put a period between every molecule outside the brackets?

You would put dehydrate when a water molecule is taken out of the reaction product. (I think of it as a canceling out which is there for instead of hydrating like water it dehydrates.) Do you not put a period in between every single molecule that is only for the highest energy level.

"Dehydrate" indicates the presence of water molecules that can be removed from the compound. The dot is used to separate different components within the compound or to denote associated molecules that are not part of the central structure but are included in the compound's formula.
