Coordinate Covalent Bond Definition

Postby ElizabethP1L » Tue May 22, 2018 3:35 pm

Hey, everyone! I thought the definition of a coordinate covalent bond wasn't that clear from the notes, so I looked it up on Google. It says that a coordinate covalent bond is when both electrons in a bond come from the same atom. I just wanted to confirm that this is the correct definition. Thanks in advance!

That sounds like the correct definition. You can also find the definition of coordinate covalent bond on page 89.

I think this is right and easy to remember. Thanks for sharing with us!

Yes! Instead of one electron coming from each atom, a coordinate covalent bond uses two electrons that come from the same atom.

For all you 6th edition people out there who see this, the definition is on page 231, stated as "[a] bond in which both electrons come from one of the atoms".

What properties (e.g. bond energy, melting point) does a coordinate covalent bond that differ from a normal covalent bond?

How can you tell if it is a coordinate covalent bond?

What would be an example problem that includes the concepts of coordinate covalent bonds?

Has Dr.Lavelle talked about coordinate covalent bonds in lecture? Or did it completely go over my head in lecture...

I don't believe this was covered in lecture. Usually, if you try to make a lewis structure and are struggling, there might be a dative or coordinate bond.

are coordinate covalent bonds the bonds found when an element has a deficient octet? i feel like i remember reading that or hearing it in lecture but im not quite sure

Coordinate covalent bond is one in which both the electrons on the bond come from the same atom

A regular covalent bond takes place when two atoms share a pair of electrons, however, in a coordinate covalent bond, these two atoms share electrons that come from the same atom.

That definition seems correct. It's basically identical to the one from lecture today!
