A coordinate covalent bond is formed when two atoms share a pair of electrons, however those shared electrons come from one atom.

They form when a central atom can complete its octet if an additional atom or ion with a lone pair of electrons forms a bond by providing both electrons.

Some compounds with fewer than eight electrons present around an atom form coordinate covalent bonds with other atoms of the same type which have lone pairs of electrons to donate in order to make them stable.
