Re: coordinate covalent bond
A coordinate covalent bond is a bond in which one atom provides both electrons in a shared pair for both atoms.

Re: coordinate covalent bond
A coordinate bond is formed when one atom provides both electrons for the shared pair with another atom that is lacking such a pair. The two electrons derive from the same atom.

Re: coordinate covalent bond
It's a bond where both electrons come from one atom, completing the octet of an atom existing in a compound with an incomplete one. The example provided in class and in the textbook was that of boron trifluoride BF3, and boron has only six valence electrons. Its octet is completed when it forms a coordinate covalent bond with another fluorine atom, forming a tetrafluoride anion.

We've used the example of BF3 quite a few times, are there any other examples that are pretty commonplace in chemistry?

Re: coordinate covalent bond
Some atoms can't complete their octet unless another atom donates a whole electron pair (2 electrons instead of 1). This is known as a coordinate covalent bond.

Re: coordinate covalent bond
A coordinate covalent bond is formed when one atom donates a lone pair of electrons to another, essentially providing both necessary electrons for the covalent bond.

Re: coordinate covalent bond
A coordinate covalent bond is formed when a single atom provides BOTH electrons (one full electron pair) in a chemical bond.
