What are some important steps to finding out the coordination number of coordination compounds?

the coordination number is just the number of bonds on the central atom (in the coordinate sphere). Therefore, you can either count the number of bonds in a lewis structure or look at the chemical formula. when looking at the chemical formula, the coordinate sphere is located inside brackets and you can see how many bounds are formed with the central metal atom.

The coordination number is determined by the number of ligands (bonded atoms) that are connected to the central metal atom in the coordination sphere. When looking at the structure, simply count the number of bonds that the central metal ion forms, and that is the coordination number.
