Ring Structure

Postby Joana Fang 1K » Sat Dec 04, 2021 10:51 pm

Could someone explain the concept of forming a ring in complex compounds? How do i know if it will form a ring?

This is a process known as chelation. Chelation requires a polydentate group (many donor atoms) to bond with a metal creating the ring. If the dentate group binding to the metal is monodentate or ambidentate, the complex is not a ring. An example of a chelate is Ethylenediaminetetraaceticacid acid (EDTA) which has 6 donor atoms bonded to the metal.
