Does size affect polarity?

Postby JohnVRobinson » Wed Dec 06, 2023 9:13 am

In cations and Anions polarity change due to the size of the ion. And would this cause the electron configuration to change as well as the charge of the ion?

Hi there!

Size wouldn't affect the polarity of the ions, only the arrangement of the atoms matters because we look for dipole moments in categorizing polarity. Size also wouldn't affect electron configuration or charge of the ion because these mostly deal with the interactions of electrons and protons within the shells.

However, size can affect other variables, such as electronegativity in that these two factors are inversely related. Therefore, size can play a role in affecting the magnitude of dipole moments, but to explore the actual differences between magnitudes is beyond 14A. I hope this helps!
