Final Review Giving off H+ to form cations

How can we tell where the H+ ion will come from (which orbital) for the following compounds?
Al and Cu?
key says 3d and 4s respectively but why?

You mean giving of e- (as in losing an electron) ....

Write out the ground state for the neutral atom.
Then remove the last (highest energy) e-.

See lecture notes. I did several examples in class.
