Why does the electron cloud of the anion get distorted?

Electron clouds can get distorted when an electric field is applied since they interact with each other. The degree which they can distorted can contribute to polarization.

The anion holds its electrons less tightly than the cation does, due to greater shielding/repulsion caused by the additional electrons - as a result, its cloud is more susceptible to distortion
