Why are multiple bonds shorter than the single bonds?

It's because the additional electrons attract the nuclei stronger, pulling the atoms closer together.

because when there are multiple bonds, the bonding electrons pull on the center nucleus more than single bonds, which pulls atoms closer to each other.

does this also have to do with the electron shielding concept that was a part of chapter 2?

I don't think electron shielding and bond length are closely related.
