Difference Between Polarizability and Polarizing Power

Postby Ahmed Mahmood 4D » Fri Dec 07, 2018 10:36 pm

What are the definitions of polarizability and polarizing power? What are the trends associated with cations and ions? What are the implications/what type of questions may we expect regarding such trends?

Polarizability is how easy it is to move or pull an atom's cloud of electrons. Polarizing power is how good an atom is at pulling on bonded electrons. These two concepts are directly opposite. Atoms with high polarizability are bigger and have a greater negative charge, while atoms that have a higher polarizing power and smaller and have a greater positive charge. I'm guessing we will get a list of ions and will have to put them in order of least to greatest polarizing power or polarizability.

Polarizing power corresponds to cations, the most polarizing power being found in the smallest cations with he greatest positive charge. On the other hand, polarizability corresponds to anions. The anions with the greater polarizability are the biggest.

Whats the relation between polarizability and charge on an anion?
