What exactly is polarizability and how are we supposed to apply it? Like, what is its purpose because I'm kind of confused?

Polarizability is how an electron cloud is distorted by an outside electric field. The bigger the atomic radius of an atom, the more polarizable it is because the positive nucleus pulls on the outer electrons less. Polarizability I think is important because we know how ions and other molecules interact with and affect an atom's electron cloud.

Polarizability and polarizing power can be predicted with periodic trends.
