LiCl vs. NaCl Boiling Point

Postby SLai_1I » Thu Dec 10, 2020 12:21 pm

Can anyone help explain why the boiling point of NaCl is higher than that of LiCl? Since Li+ has a stronger polarizing power than Na+ (because Li+ is a smaller cation), wouldn't that mean that LiCl has stronger LDF's than NaCl? Please let me know if I'm understanding this wrong!

I think NaCl has a higher boiling point because there is a bigger difference in electronegativity, making the NaCl molecule more ionic than the LiCl molecule. Thus, resulting it NaCl having a higher boiling point.
