Trend?

Postby 705676154 » Sun Dec 05, 2021 1:25 am

I could be wrong but I remember there being a trend on the periodic table for polarization, if so what is the trend?

Larger anions are more polarizable because they have a weaker hold on electrons while smaller cations have high polarizing power because they have stronger pull on anion's electrons (increasing from left to right, and decreasing down on periodic table).

The trend is increasing polarizability going diagonal, from left to right across the periodic table.

The larger anions get, the more polarizable they become, while the smaller a cation gets, the more polarizable it becomes. This means polarizability trends diagonally from the top left of the periodic table to the bottom right.

Yes it decreases diagonally from the top left to the bottom right.

Smaller and more positively charged cations are more POLARIZING and are able to POLARIZE anions more. Larger and more negatively charged anions are more POLARIZABLE and are able to be POLARIZED by cations more. Large cations are bad at polarizing and small anions are bad at being polarized.

I believe that bigger atoms will be more polarizable since their outer shells can be distorted more easily. And smaller cations can be the ones polarizing these bigger atoms since they have a stronger pull on the electrons

Another good way to think about it electronegativity difference.
