Electronegativity Numbers

Postby Shirleen_2C » Wed Nov 13, 2024 12:48 am

There are questions on outline 3 --> 2D1, 2D3, 2D5 that involve electronegativity and I was wondering if those were hypothetically on the exam, would be provided with the electronegativity chart>?

Hello! I believe like the previous midterm, you would have to recognize the periodic trends that are from left to right and up to down! We can recognize electronegativity and relate it to several periodic trends that we've learned previously like radius and effective nuclear charge. I think of it as the more you go right across a period, the electronegativity increases as the radii get smaller, and as effective nuclear charge increases. What you need to know, is mainly the magnitude of the difference between two atoms when bonded. For example we know that H-Cl vs C-I, Cl has a higher effective nuclear charge, smaller radius, and higher electronegativity, and thus it shows a higher ionic character because the difference of electronegativity between H and Cl is much larger than HI! Hope this helps1
