How does electronegativity influence the ionic character of a bond?

The greater difference there is in electronegativity, the more ionic the bond is.

Hi! Ionic bonds tend to have a big difference in electronegativity while covalent bonds have a small difference in electronegativity.

These are rough guidelines but hope it helps! Anything with an electronegativity difference > 2 is an ionic bond, and anything with an electronegativity difference < 1.5 is a covalent bond.

The greater the difference in electronegativity, the more ionic the bond becomes. In contrast, when electronegativity values are similar, electrons are shared more equally, and a covalent bond forms with a lesser degree of ionic character.
