Polarizability

Postby Star_Garcia_3B » Wed Nov 15, 2023 3:27 pm

Does polarizability change under certain conditions, such as temperature or pressure? If so, how?

The polarizability of a substance can change with temperature and pressure. Higher temperatures may increase polarizability due to increased electron kinetic energy, while higher pressure can compress the electron cloud, also affecting polarizability. These changes can influence the substance's physical and chemical properties. Higher temperatures and pressures may alter optical properties, dielectric properties, and interactions with electric fields.

Hello,

Yes, polarizability can depend on temperature and pressure because bigger electron clouds means it’s easier to distort and this can relate to temperature because when polarization decrease, there is an increase in temperature since it has an inverse relationship and bigger atoms mean it’s more polarizable.
