Electronegativity and bond strength

Postby Wenting_2F » Wed Nov 15, 2023 8:56 pm

Does the strength of a chemical bond correlate with the electronegativity difference between the two bonded atoms, such that a larger electronegativity difference results in stronger bonds?

Yes! Larger EN results in more ionic character. More ionic character= stronger forces/bonds. nut for forces you mainly wanna look at whether its dipole, hydrogen, ionic, etc and factor all those in as well when comparing.

Yes, as the difference in electronegativity between the two atoms increases, the strength of the bond increases. You can think of how ionic bonds are stronger than covalent bonds,
