Placing Charge

Postby paula rizo 3E » Thu Nov 16, 2023 12:57 am

Hi, where should the charge be placed if I want a very stable Lewis structure? Thanks!

Hi,

I don't think the charge really matters in placement. Just as long as the charge that you got from the formal charge from the specific element matches the element in the Lewis structure. For example, if Na has a FC of 2+, the make sure the charge on the Lewis Structure is labeled 2+. Remember that the most stable would obv be a molecule with an overall charge of 0, but if you cannot obtain that, then the charge shouldn't matter. Hope this made sense!
