Electronegativity Difference

Postby Bea Cruz » Fri Nov 17, 2023 1:25 pm

How does electronegativity difference decipher whether it is covalent or ionic?

If the electronegativity difference is small, they will share electrons, so the bond will be covalent. If the electronegativity difference is large, they will not share electrons, so the bond will be ionic.

Hi!
There is a general rule that states if the electronegativity difference is greater than 2, than the bond has ionic character and can be considered ionic, but if it is less than 1.5, then it has greater covalent character and can be considered covalent. Hope this helps!

Covalent Bonds are usually closer together, so the difference in electronegativity will be smaller. while ionic bonds have a higher electronegativity difference meaning the atoms that are bonded are usually father apart.
