Electronegativity and electron affinity

Postby Fernell_Orellana_3C » Mon Dec 04, 2023 6:58 pm

Hello,

The concept of electron affinity is still a bit unclear to me. How is electronegativity and electron affinity related? I remember seeing that higher electron affinity also means a higher electronegativity.

Electronegativity is the ability of an electron to be attracted to an atom while electron affinity is the amount of energy released when an electron gets added to an atom. Thus, if an element has a high electronegativity it will have a high electron affinity because the attraction will be greater the greater amount of energy being released.

Electronegativity is the ability for an atom to attract electrons. And electron affinity is the energy change that occurs when an atom gains an electron. A general trend between the two is that atoms with a higher electronegativity tend to have a higher electron affinity.

Electronegativity is the ability of an electron to attract towards an atom. Electron affinity refers to a neutral atom's likelihood of gaining an electron. In general, atom's with higher electronegativity have higher electron affinity.
