Electronegativity Differences

Postby Christina Diep 3A » Mon Dec 04, 2023 10:22 pm

What is the electronegativity difference needed for a bond to be either ionic or covalent bond? I've seen some varying numbers which confuses me.

If the electronegativity difference is greater than 2, it is classified as ionic. Anything less than 1.5 is classified as covalent, but if it's closer to 1.5, it is polar covalent.

in order for an ionic bond, the difference in electronegativity should be 2 or above.
