I remember Dr. Lavelle mentioning certain elements as exceptions to the general table trend regarding electronegativity. Does anyone know which elements they are and why they are an exception?

The textbook tells us that one of the elements is oxygen, and I believe it goes more in depth about how we can find these exceptions.

oxygen and nitrogen are exceptions to the trend for ionization energy, not for electronegativity. we expect oxygen to have higher IE than nitrogen but nitrogen has higher IE. this is because of the p orbital. oxygen has 4 electrons in the p subshell, while nitrogen has 3. because nitrogen has 3 electrons that are all the same spin it is more stable than oxygen with 4 electrons in the p subshell. because of the 3 being more stable than the 4, it is harder to take an electron from nitrogen, which is why nitrogen has a higher ionization energy.
