Electropositivity

Postby jillian1k » Wed Nov 08, 2017 6:24 pm

Is electropositivity just the opposite of electronegativity? Would it literally be the opposite periodic/group trend of electronegativity with it increasing down a group and right to left across a period? There was a problem in the chapter 3 homework about this and I just want to make sure I understand the concept correctly.
Thanks!

Yes, it is the complete opposite. Electropositivity is more for metals while electronegativity is more for non-metals. It increases in a group from top to bottom and decreases across a period from left to right.

Additionally, the more electronegative an element is, the less electropositive it is and vice versa.

Yes, given that electropositivity is the opposite of electronegativity, it can be defined as the ability of an element to lose electrons and form positive ions (cations).
