Calculating electronegativity

Postby RichardValdez1L » Sun May 20, 2018 11:56 pm

Although we know the trend for electronegativity and "FONCl", are we supposed to have the other element's electronegativities memorized or is there a way to calculate it?

Electronegativity increases across a period and decreases down a column

I don't believe we have to have it memorized we just need to know the pattern so it increases across and decreases down a column.

I don't think there will be a question where there is a need to know the exact value to get the answer, just the trend is important. And we don't need to know how to calculate it.

When comparing electronegativity between elements, you can assume that the element that has more valence electrons or a fuller outer shell is more electronegative.

pretty sure we should just be going off of the periodic table trends if they aren't one of the FONCI atoms

we do not need to know how to calculate electronegativities. However, the trend is that EN increases towards an upwards diagonal to the right. it decreases down a column and increases across a row.

I think we can just follow the general trends for that (increasing as we go to the right of the periodic table, decreasing as we go down). If values are given, remember that an electronegativity difference greater than 2 indicates an ionic bond and one less than 1.5 shows a covalent bond.

Understanding the trends of more than just electronegativity is really important, but in terms of knowing a specific value, it will all be given; it is not required.

I think you just need to understand the trend - electronegativity increases from left to right and decreases from top to bottom.

Are we also supposed to have memorized the exceptions to the electronegativity trend? i.e C, N, O, F
