Problem 2D #11 (7th edition)

Postby AlyssaBei_1F » Sun Nov 04, 2018 5:37 pm

On Problem 2D #11 (7th edition), can someone explain to me how O2- is smaller than N3- for polarizability?

The polarizability gets bigger as the ion gets larger. The radius of O2- is less that the radius of N3-. Thus, it has a smaller polarizability. Also, N3- is less electronegative which also contributes.

The electronegativity for N is 3.0 and for O is 3.5 So N3- is more electronegative than O2-.
