Electronegativity and Polarity

Postby Tam To 1B » Tue Nov 20, 2018 2:10 pm

What's the relation between polarizability and electronegativity?

As electronegativity decreases, polarizability increases.

Polarizability is the degree to which a particle's electron clouds can be distorted. Electronegativity is the degree to which a particle wants to pull in electrons. The bigger the polarizability a particle has, the less electronegativity it has; for example, larger atoms have bigger electron clouds that can be easily distorted and are less electronegative.

They’re inverses! As one inc, the other dec, and vice versa.
