Electron Negativity vs affinity?

Postby tonyhu » Wed Oct 30, 2019 11:20 pm

If they follow the same trends on the periodic table, why do we keep these separate measurements?

Electronegativity is a measured value while electron affinity is not. They are separate because electron affinity is a concept that combines electronegativity and ionization energy to present information more comprehensibly.

I don't think it's too important to know but as long as you know they follow the same trends and understand what they both mean that's all that needed to know

electron affinity is the energy released when electrons are added to a gas phase atom. electronegativity is the electron pulling power of an atom.

Electronegativity indicates HOW WELL/TENDENCY an atom attracts electrons to itself. Whereas electron affinity measures the exact amount of energy released when an electron is added to an atom in the gas phase.

I believe electronegativity is a measure of how much an atom "wants" to gain an electron, whereas electron affinity is a measure of the amount of energy released when it does gain an electron.
