memorizing tables

Postby Mallika Singh 1G » Sun Nov 03, 2019 7:54 pm

For the electronegativity numbers, will we be given a table or be asked to memorize any?

I think it's dependent on the question. For example, if the question is asking about the numerical value of the electronegativity difference between two atoms of different elements, you probably wouldn't be expected to know this off the top of your head. However, it is pretty reasonable to be expected to know how to put elements in order of increasing or decreasing electronegativity without needing a reference sheet with the electronegativity values written on them.

You probably don't have to memorize the electronegativity of every single element on the periodic table, but you can remember that Fluroine (F) is the most electronegative (4) and Francium is the least electronegative (0.7). Reminder: electronegativity increases as you go across a period from left to right, and decreases as you go down a group.

You probably don't need to memorize specific values and only need to know periodic trends in order to answer the questions.

You do not need need to memorise any values for electronegativity. The only thing you need to know is the trend across a period and down the group in order to be able to assume which element is more/less electronegative than another.

i don't think you need to memorize the actual numbers, but you can at least have a general, relative estimate of the values maybe

Don't memorize the table! Just know that F is the most electronegative element and electronegativity decreases as you go left and down the periodic table

Just know the general trend on the periodic table.

I don't believe you need to memorize the electronegativity numbers just the electronegativity trend which increases across and up a period.

It is important to know the trends going across the table however, I don't think he will ever ask a question regarding specific personalized numbers to an atom.
