Calculating elctronegativity

Postby Crystal Odipo 1F » Tue Nov 17, 2020 9:22 pm

On the midterm will we be expected to calculate electronegativity? Or is it more like we are going to need to know how to interpret electronegativity values?

In one of the Workshops someone had this question, and the answer was no you are not expected to calculate element electronegativity values, they would have to be given to you.

Electronegativity calculations aren't something we are expected to know because usually they are given. The only thing we would need to do with them is to interpret them, recognize the periodic trend, and compare them between molecules/atoms/salts/compounds.

You don't need to know the values, you should just know the periodic trends.

As everyone stated above, I'm pretty sure we would just need to know the trends and we would also need to know what that implies. For example, an atom with a high electronegativity is most likely to have a negative charge as it likes to gain electrons while an atom with a low electronegativity will usually have a positive charge as it likes to give away electrons.

You should be good with just knowing the trends on the periodic table!

I'm pretty sure that as long as you know the periodic trends and how to interpret them you should be good since since electronegativity calculations is something we are not expected to do.

Just knowing the tends of electronegatively on the periodic table should be sufficient enough for the midterm. You can expect the actual value to be given to you on the exam.

We don't need to have the numbers memorized for this class I believe. It's important to understand the trend however, so even if you are not given numbers you can generally say something about the electronegativity difference between two elements.
