Lone Pairs in H Bonding

Postby Lachlan Guo 1G » Sat Nov 09, 2024 8:56 am

I understand that the NOF atom uses its lone pair(s) in H bonding but can someone explain why this is? Does the NOF atom share its electrons with the H atom to create an attractive force or are they just pulled slightly towards the H?

The lone pair on NOF is involved in the attraction, but it doesn’t actually form a bond by sharing electrons with hydrogen like a covalent bond. Instead, it simply provides a negatively charged area that attracts the partial positive charge on the hydrogen atom, creating a strong, but non-covalent, attractive force.
