Hydrogen Bonding

Postby Marc Choi 2A » Sun Nov 10, 2024 6:59 pm

I know that for hydrogen bonding, the H must be covalently bonded to either an N, O, F atom. However, does the lone pair donor atom also have to be N, O, F? can the lone pair atom be any atom with strong electronegativity?

Hi Marc,
The lone pair donor atom does not always have to be N, O, F, but ideally, it should be. Other electronegative atoms with lone pairs can work with hydrogen bonding, but the interactions are typically weaker and less stable because of their lower electronegativity and larger atomic size.
Hope this helped!
