Dipole

Postby 406025813 » Sun Dec 10, 2023 12:26 pm

From what I understand, the moment of a dipole is influenced by direction and mangnitude. The direction is measured by the electronegativity of the atoms, but what happens to the magnitude?

Your understanding about direction is correct I believe! When it comes to magnitude, charge separation and bond length both come into play. The greater the difference in electronegativity there is between two atoms, the larger the dipole moment. As bond length increases, dipole moment tends to decrease with it.
