Dipole Moments

Postby AlyssaPeckham1A » Sat Nov 25, 2017 8:27 pm

Could someone elaborate on dipole moments and how to draw them? Also, should we only draw dipole moments when the question specifically asks for them?

Dipole moments refer to the net polarity of a molecule. You draw them in arrows. The atoms that is more electronegative wants the electrons more. Therefore, the arrow should be drawn to the more electronegative atom. If all of these change vectors cancel each other out (given that they are the same atom), you know that there is a net dipole moment of 0. You don't need to draw them if you aren't asked.

Dipole moments relate to the separation of the ends of the molecule and the magnitude of the charges. And you shouldn't have to draw them unless you are asked to or to make a concept clearer.

Keep in mind that the arrows for dipole moments should be labeled accordingly. If the dipole arrow is pointing towards one atom, that atom should have δ-. Meanwhile the base of the arrow, which is labeled for the bonding atom, should have δ+.
