London Dispersion, Induced dipole- Induced dipole, Van Der Waals

Postby Mario Reyes 1C » Sun May 20, 2018 2:03 pm

In class Professor Lavelle said these are all similar, so is there really no difference to these forces besides the name?

Yes, for the purpose of our class, the names dispersion, induced dipole-induced dipole, London, and Van der Waals can be used interchangeably to describe the fluctuating electron distribution that results in fluctuating dipoles. The term "induced dipole-induced dipole" is the most descriptive for this interaction.

I do not believe there is a difference besides naming for our purposes.

no, there is no difference.
As professor mentioned, all of them 3 describe the same thing, but the induced dipole-induced dipole is the best one that demenstrartes what's actually going on.

Yes, all three of those names can be interchanged with one another since they mean the same thing.

Yes, all four terms relate to the same forces for our class.
