HCl
in lecture, lavelle was talking about how HCl has a permanent dipole moment and I was wondering how do we know that.

Re: HCl
There is an electronegativity difference between the H and Cl atoms. Cl is more electronegative and thus attracts electrons more, causing the dipole.

Re: HCl
HCl has a permanent dipole moment because H becomes slightly positive because it gives its electron to Cl which becomes slightly negative.

Re: HCl
HCl has a permanent dipole because Cl is one of the most electronegative element while H isn't. So, Cl has the tendency to pull all the electron, creating a dipole.

Re: HCl
HCl has a permanent dipole moment because of its polarity. Cl is more electronegative, so Cl side always has a slight negative charge.

Re: HCl
Chlorine is electronegative and H gives it an electron, making it slightly more positive and thus chlorine is more negative, creating a dipole moment
