Attractive Force
Does increasing the size of an atom result in a stronger attractive force or a weaker attractive force? Why?

Re: Attractive Force
Increasing the size of an atom increases the attractive forces because it increases the dispersion forces, or the uneven distribution of electrons in the electron cloud, and thus creates more dipole and induced dipole moments.

Re: Attractive Force
Although I agree with the point mentioned above, it is also important to think about the size of the atom. The larger the atom or the more energy levels it has, the farther the atom will be from the atom it is bonded to. Since the distance between the two atoms will be larger, the bond will be weaker.

Re: Attractive Force
I think depending on the energy levels and ultimately the distance between each atom, the bond can be weaker even if the size is larger. But, it ultimately becomes the ratios between distance and energy level that will determine the attractiveness.
