Homework Question 4.29, 6th edition

How from diagram pictures, are we able tell what is polar and non polar and what compound has the greatest dipole moment?

To tell which one has the greatest dipole moment, basically add the dipole moments in the way you add vectors (if you've gone over that in math) if you're not familiar with vector addition, simply just add together the arrows and see which ones cancel each other the least or add up to the biggest longest arrow, hence the biggest dipole moment. If they're going in opposite ways, they cancel/subtract and if its the same direction then you add them together to get a bigger dipole moment.

Think of the overall dipole of the molecule or lack thereof as a geometric sum of the all the bond dipoles in the molecules. Use the period trends to reason the electronegativity differences of atoms to decipher the polarity of individual bonds.
