TEST 3: Polarity

Postby Shirley Liu 2I » Mon Nov 26, 2018 4:38 pm

On test 3, should we draw dipole moment arrows pointing toward the positive or negative dipoles? In lecture, Dr. Lavelle has them pointing toward the negative dipoles while the textbook has them pointing toward the positive dipoles

I think the arrow should always point toward the negative.

I believe it is conventional to draw the dipole arrows towards the more electronegative atom... so the atom with the partial negative charge. I would probably recommend doing that on the test, especially because Dr. Lavelle did it that way.

I would follow Lavelle's example and have them point towards the negative!

I believe the arrow should always point to the negative, and thats the way Lavelle did it in class, so I would probably do it that way

Arrows point to the atom with the negative charge.

The arrows should point to the atom with a negative charge.

I agree! the arrow should always point toward the atom with a negative charge.
