Cis vs trans
When we are told to draw a Lewis structure that could either be cis or trans, and we are asked to determine if it is polar, doesn’t this depend on how we drew the molecule? Is there a convention that favors cis or trans when drawing Lewis structures that would help us determine if a molecule is polar or not?

Re: Cis vs trans
Yes, polarity does depend on whether the molecule is cis or trans.
I don't believe we will ever be given a molecule that could be either and asked about it's polarity if it's not specifically told which way it should be drawn.

Re: Cis vs trans
In that case, I would think that whether the molecule is cis or trans will be given

Re: Cis vs trans
Yes, polarity depends on shape in general, and whether a molecule is cis or trans changes its shape. Cis and trans is not a key topic in this class, but if you wish to learn more about it, try using the index of your textbook to find pages where it is mentioned :)
