Strength of intramolecular forces due to polarity

Postby Isabelle Fontanilla 1I » Sun Dec 02, 2018 9:38 pm

How does polarity affect the strength of intramolecular force?

If you have a substance with nonpolar molecules , the only Intermolecular Forces of Attraction that exist are London-Dispersion forces, which are very weak. Therefore, a polar substance will have a stronger attraction between its molecules than a substance with nonpolar molecules.

Between two polar molecules, such as HF and HF, there are dipole-diploe interactions going on. It is a slightly greater intermolecular attractive force than the dispersion force between two non-polar molecules.

Polar molecules can bond with each other via dipole-dipole interactions, which are generally stronger than van der Waals forces.

a good way to remember that polar molecules form dipole dipole interactions between them is the fact that the word "pole" of polar is in the name dipole.

Usually, increasing the polarization of bonds increases the strength of the intermolecular forces
