The Electric Dipole Moment in molecules is simply the measure of the charge difference between atoms in a polar covalent bond. It occurs because of a difference in electronegativity between the two atoms.
A dipole moment is when there is a separation of positive and negative charges between atoms in a molecule, and is a measure of net molecular polarity. It can be seen with Oxygen, where the oxygen atom is more electronegative than the hydrogens and slightly negatively charged, while the hydrogen atoms are slightly positively charged.
