Dipole Moments

Can someone please explain the concept of dipole moments? I don't quite understand it. Thank you.

Dipole moments arise from differences in electronegativity, which represents a separation of charge. One part of the compound is slightly positive while the other is slightly negative. We represent this using an arrow pointing in the direction of the slightly negative portion.

We can also measure this difference in charge using a unit called debye.

Dipole moments occur because of a separation of charge (caused by a difference in electronegativity). The more electronegative element has the greater share of the electrons than less electronegative element causing it to have a net negative charge. The larger the difference in electronegativity, the larger the dipole moment.

dipole moments are the result of differences in electronegativity, and the atoms share electrons unequally. this creates a partial charge of +/-.

A difference in electronegativity results in an unequal sharing of electrons between atoms, resulting in a dipole moment.
