In the equation EP is inversely related to -(a1-a2/r^6), where do we find the values that we plug into this and why is it necessary to have a negative in the beginning?

There is a negative sign because the EP is always negative because it is always an attractive force.

The variable a1 represents the charge of the first ion (cation) while a2 is the charge of the second ion (anion).
