Dipole moments

Postby Mallika Chimpiri 3K » Sun Nov 10, 2019 2:10 pm

How exactly does a dipole moment occur? and how is it induced?

Dipole moments arise from differences in electronegativity between atoms. Like if there is a polar atom it may induce a dipole on another atom since it has a charge.

A dipole describes the separation of charges between 2 bonded atoms.

A dipole is a compound that has a difference in electronegativity between two different species of atoms, and the one with the higher electronegativity attracts the electrons to the atom, making one atom more negative and one more positive.

dipole moments occur when a polar molecule comes within close proximity to a non-polar molecule. A partial positive of the polar molecule will attract the electrons of the non-polar molecule and cause them to migrate to one side of the molecule resulting in a momentary partial negative until the molecules drift out of close enough proximity (and vice versa).

induced dipole moment is caused whej a polarizing molecules gets close enough to a non polarized molecule that it disturbs it’s electron arrangement of the non polarized molecule
