A dipole is a pair of equal and oppositely charged or magnetized poles separated by a distance.

You know a dipole is occurring through periodic trends. For example, we know oxygen has a higher electronegativity than hydrogen so there will be a dipole moment between them.

You can determine if there is a dipole moment if you identify the relative electronegativities of each element in a respective compound. The larger the difference between the values, the larger the dipole moment.
