Dipole Moment

Postby Jessica Castellanos » Sun Nov 10, 2019 5:40 pm

What is a dipole moment? Is that the same thing as a molecule having a dipole? Thanks!

no. dipole moment is temporary.

A dipole moment is essentially the measurement of charge differences (when the molecule has a dipole). It can be calculated by multiplying the charge (q) times distance between atoms. Dipole moment therefore increases with larger distances and charges.

A dipole moment is not the same a dipole because it is only temporary

The two are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Differences in electronegativity/charge can be represented by the calculable value of the dipole moment. When a dipole moment is present, you know electrons are being shared unevenly between the two molecules.

When Lavelle was drawing the water molecule to show the dipole moment why did he put the arrows pointing toward the oxygen? Is it because of oxygen's higher electronegativity?

a dipole moment occurs when a electron has a higher charger and so that electron is favored over another
