Dipole moment units

Postby claudia_1h » Sun Nov 10, 2019 7:19 pm

The units of the dipole moment (C x m) have me somewhat confused. What does the calculation for a dipole moment (charge x distance) actually tell you? Is it the strength of the interaction?

Like you said, the SI unit is Coulombs times Meter and it denotes the magnitude of charge times the distance between them

The calculation for the dipole moment actually tells you the measurement for the separation of two opposite charges of molecules.

Dipole moment calculates the polarity of the chemical bond (how different the polarity between the two atoms are)

Usually they are written in Debye which are 1 x 10^-18 C*m. It is just more applicable for working with small numbers.
