Dipole moments

Postby SarahSteffen_LEC4 » Mon Nov 11, 2019 4:43 pm

Do nonpolar molecules ever experience dipole moments or is it just for polar molecules?

If a molecule is completely symmetric, then the dipole moment vectors on each molecule will cancel each other out, making the molecule nonpolar

Dispersion forces are pretty much instantaneous dipole moments that occur in all atoms and molecules, nonpolar and polar. So nonpolar molecules do experience dipole moments but only for an instant.
